Research strategy & roadmap template

Use this template to capture a concise, aligned research strategy you can share, review, and iterate. Complete the sections below to convert curiosity into a prioritized, resourced roadmap that links questions and experiments to measurable impact and decision checkpoints.

State the long-term research vision and the mission of this research program in 2–4 sentences. Why does this work matter? Who benefits?
Optional: Describe links to strategy, product goals, clinical needs, regulatory priorities, or competitive differentiation.
List the primary research questions this program will address. Put each question on a new line.
Describe the top problems or opportunities you will tackle and why they are prioritized. Include brief rationale for priority.
For each metric, include: name, baseline, target, measurement method, and frequency. Example: 'Lead time for assay X — baseline 8 days — target 3 days — measured monthly'.
List projects, experiments, or milestones with short descriptions and an expected primary owner. One per line. Include estimated cost or rough effort if known.
Medium-term initiatives that depend on early results, scale-up activities, or capability building.
Longer-horizon directions, commercialization or translational milestones, or large capability investments.
Summarize people, skills, equipment, data, facilities, and external partners required. Call out critical dependencies (e.g., shared instrumentation, regulatory approval, data access).
Enter a rounded estimate for the planned period or overall program.
List roles and approximate FTEs (e.g., 1.0 PI, 0.5 data scientist, 0.2 regulatory lead).
Describe the most significant risk to delivery or impact.
Estimate how likely this risk is to occur.
Estimate impact if the risk occurs.
Describe mitigation steps, triggers, and responsible owner.
List checkpoints (e.g., quarterly review, go/no-go gates), what decision is to be made, required evidence, and decision owner.
List primary owners, steering committee members, and stakeholders to notify. Include contact or role.
How and when will results, risks, and decisions be communicated to stakeholders?
Optional: links to protocols, data dictionaries, key references, or attached documents.
