Measurement uncertainty & error-budget workbook
Purpose
Use this interactive workbook to record measurement sources, estimate standard uncertainties, combine them into a combined standard uncertainty, track calibration activity, and capture uncertainty-propagation notes. The form saves your entries so you can update the workbook as experiments evolve.
How to use
Enter each identifiable source of uncertainty (resolution, calibration, repeatability, environment, etc.) as a separate row. For each source provide an estimated standard uncertainty (same units as the measurement). The combined standard uncertainty u_c is the square root of the sum of the squares of the individual standard uncertainties: u_c = sqrt(sum u_i^2). Multiply u_c by a coverage factor k (commonly 2 for ~95% confidence) to obtain the expanded uncertainty U = k * u_c.
Worked example
Example: instrument resolution (0.05 units), repeatability (0.08 units), calibration certificate (0.03 units). Combined standard uncertainty = sqrt(0.05^2 + 0.08^2 + 0.03^2) = sqrt(0.0025 + 0.0064 + 0.0009) = sqrt(0.0098) = 0.099. For k=2, expanded uncertainty U = 0.198 units.
