Opportunity Framing Workbook

Turn vague interests or recurring complaints into focused discovery questions and minimal, testable hypotheses. Use this workbook during a short framing workshop or asynchronously with collaborators. Fill the fields you can, save progress, and iterate as new evidence appears.

Each section includes short prompts and facilitator notes. Aim for brevity: a useful frame is often clearer than a polished document. The workbook captures: a problem statement (who, need, impact), stakeholder map and assumptions, a simple evidence checklist, a testable hypothesis with success criteria and guardrails, and suggested first experiments and metrics.

Describe the person or group experiencing the problem. Be specific about role, context, and constraints. E.g., 'night-shift nurses in a 200-bed acute hospital.'
Focus on the underlying job-to-be-done or pain point rather than a proposed solution. E.g., 'faster triage decisions during peak hours.'
Explain the benefit of addressing this need. Quantify if possible (time saved, reduced errors, revenue, satisfaction).
List key stakeholders, their interest, and influence. Include users, approvers, maintainers, and those who may be affected indirectly.
State the assumptions underlying your framing. These are the highest-risk beliefs you should test first.
Capture observed facts, existing data, interviews, or incidents that motivated this opportunity.
List hypotheses that you currently treat as true but haven't validated.
Write a concise, testable hypothesis using this pattern: If [intervention], then [expected measurable outcome], because [rationale]. Include how you'll measure the outcome.
Define numeric or binary criteria that will count as success and list guardrails or constraints that prevent harmful side-effects.
Design small, fast tests that address the riskiest assumptions. Include the experiment design, sample/scale, duration, and what you'll measure.
List the single primary metric you'll use to judge progress, one or two leading indicators, and any neutral or negative signals to monitor.
What could go wrong? What steps will you take to reduce or monitor these risks?
