Discovery Backlog & Pipeline Item

Capture discovery opportunities so learning survives the next meeting

This interactive template helps teams record promising ideas, triage them with evidence-informed fields, stage work through lightweight maturity states, and collect the inputs needed for fair prioritization. Use the fields below to create a discoverable, re-usable backlog entry.

Why these fields matter

  • Assumption & Hypothesis: Makes the unknown explicit so experiments prove or disprove a clear statement.
  • Evidence: Capture signals you already have and gaps to reduce uncertainty.
  • Value Estimate and Effort Proxy: Lightweight numbers that enable simple prioritization math.
  • Maturity state: Helps teams decide the next action: research, prototype, or scale.

Suggested prioritization method (simple, transparent)

Compute a raw priority score as (Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort. Higher scores indicate earlier attention. Example:

Impact=4, Confidence=3, Effort=2 → Score = (4×3)/2 = 6

Use the score as a starting point and layer in strategic fit or timing during reviews.

Short, descriptive name for the opportunity (5–10 words).
Who benefits? Internal team, external customer segment, persona, or stakeholder group.
The riskiest assumption you're making (the thing an experiment would test).
A short testable hypothesis such as 'If we do X, then Y will improve by Z'.
Observations, data, customer quotes, or links that justify working on this now. Include gaps to fill.
A rough ordinal or numeric estimate of potential value. Keep the scale consistent across your backlog.
Where is this opportunity in the discovery lifecycle?
Estimate the relative effort (1 = very small, 5 = very large). Use the same scale across items.
1.0 10.0
How confident are you in the assumptions / evidence? (1 = low, 5 = high)
1.0 10.0
Expected impact if validated (1 = low, 5 = high)
1.0 10.0
How well this aligns to strategy (1 = poor, 5 = excellent)
1.0 10.0
Person or team responsible for next steps.
Practical next action to reduce uncertainty or progress the opportunity.
Comma-separated keywords (customer segment, technology, goal).
Any additional context, links to docs, or meeting notes.
Auto-populated if the platform supports it; otherwise enter ISO date.
Optional manual priority to override the simple score during reviews.
