Quick start — three moves to create useful scenarios
- Frame the question: Decide what strategic choice, product, market, or risk you want to explore. Write it as a focused question (for example: "How should we prioritize investments in payments APIs if regulation tightens vs remains open?").
- Identify drivers & uncertainties: List forces that shape outcomes (technology, regulation, customer behavior, supply chains) and pick the two most critical and uncertain to build scenario axes from.
- Build narratives & implications: Combine axis extremes into coherent, plausible stories. For each scenario, map near-term implications, strategic risks, opportunities, and candidate experiments.

Translating scenarios into risk registers and adaptive plans
For each high-impact implication, decide whether to:
- Accept and monitor (low-cost monitoring signals)
- Hedge with experiments (run pilots to reduce uncertainty)
- Mitigate (change operations or controls)
- Escalate to leadership (if high-impact and immediate)
Record mitigation actions in your operational risk register and link experiments and triggers back to owners and budgets.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Treating scenarios as predictions: Use them to expand options, not to pick a single forecast.
