Data Steward Role Description & Data Quality KPI Tracker
Role templates for clinical, ETL, and analytics data stewards; a practical triage workflow for data issues; and an interactive KPI tracker you can use to record, monitor, and assign remediation for core data-quality metrics (completeness, timeliness, accuracy, lineage, and consistency). Saves entries to the platform for history and reporting.
Data Steward Role Description & Data Quality KPI Tracker
Overview
This tool gives you: role templates you can copy and adapt for Clinical, ETL, and Analytics Data Stewards; a clear triage workflow for data issues so nothing gets orphaned; and an interactive KPI tracker to record measurements, owners, status, and remediation steps. Use the tracker to build trust in analytics and create an auditable history of fixes.
Role templates (copy and adapt)
Clinical Data Steward
Focus: clinical source systems, data definitions, and clinical context. Typical responsibilities: own clinical master data definitions; validate clinical value sets and mappings; coordinate with clinicians for content accuracy; escalate patient-safety risks; review clinical-data-related change requests; verify lineage to source systems.
ETL Data Steward
Focus: extract-transform-load processes and data pipelines. Typical responsibilities: own ETL mappings and transformations; maintain pipeline run-time monitoring; investigate transformation failures; own data lineage documentation; coordinate remediation with engineering and operations.
Analytics Data Steward
Focus: analytical models, dashboards, and derived datasets. Typical responsibilities: own dataset quality checks used in reporting; validate metric definitions; act as liaison to report authors; track and verify fixes for analytic data issues; curate data used for predictive models.
Triage workflow (recommended)
- Report: Any team member files a data issue (include dataset, field, sample values, and business impact).
- Initial Triage (Analytics Steward or Assigned Triage Owner): classify impact (Clinical Safety / Operational / Reporting / Low), assign owner (Clinical / ETL / Analytics), record ticket ID and expected SLA.
- Investigate: assigned owner reproduces, identifies root cause (source data, transformation, mapping, tooling), and documents lineage evidence.
- Remediate: owner implements fix or creates a change request; record remediation steps and rollback plan if required.
- Verify & Close: triage owner verifies result against acceptance criteria; update historical tracker entry and notify stakeholders.
