A ready-to-run pack of 10 focused microlessons (2–5 minutes each) that combine short instructor videos/slides, quick knowledge checks, and on-the-job practice tasks with clear acceptance criteria to accelerate operator competence and reduce variation.

Welcome — Why this pack exists

This microlearning pack is designed to shorten time-to-competence for new operators by pairing bite-sized instruction with immediate, evidence-based practice on the line. Each microlesson targets one essential skill or decision point, uses a short focused media piece (video or slides), includes a rapid knowledge check, and defines a small on-the-job task with objectively measurable acceptance criteria.

How to use this pack

  • Deliver lessons at the point of work or in brief pre-shift huddles.
  • Keep individual lessons to 2–5 minutes of instruction followed by a 5–15 minute practice task on the machine or workstation.
  • Assess practice with the provided acceptance criteria — a supervisor or trained mentor observes and confirms competence.
  • Record completion and observations so the training team can measure progress and spot recurring problems.

Pack structure (consistent template for each lesson)

  1. Objective — one sentence describing the observable capability.
  2. Media — one short video clip or 2–3 slide visuals (total 2–5 minutes).
  3. Quick check — 1–3 multiple-choice or yes/no questions to confirm understanding.
  4. On-the-job task — a short practice task performed on the line with clear acceptance criteria and a pass/fail decision.
  5. Coach notes — common errors, safety reminders, and tips to speed learning.

Ten Microlesson Titles and Objectives

  1. Safety Start: PPE & Emergency Stops — Demonstrate correct PPE for the station and locate/operate the nearest emergency stop.
  2. Machine Basics: Power-Up & Safe Shutdown — Power on and shutdown the machine following site standard work and safety checks.
  3. First Checks: Pre-Start Inspection — Complete the pre-start checklist and identify two things that would prevent startup.
  4. Material Handling: Loading & Securing Raw Material — Properly load material and confirm alignment within tolerance.
  5. Operation: Start Cycle & Monitor Key Indicators — Start a cycle, read three key indicators, and respond to a basic out-of-spec alarm.
  6. Common Defects: Identify & Document — Recognize the three most frequent defects for this part and record them correctly.
  7. Escalation Protocol: When to Stop & Who to Call — Follow escalation steps for a safety or quality stop and notify the right person(s).
  8. Minor Adjustment: Make a Simple Change — Make an approved adjustment (e.g., feed, guide) that stays within standard limits.
  9. 5S & Housekeeping: Quick Station Reset — Complete a rapid station tidy and prepare for the next run within five minutes.
  10. Wrap-up: Handover & Shift Notes — Complete a handover that communicates status, deviations, and outstanding actions.

Objective

Complete the pre-start inspection using the standard pre-start checklist and identify any condition that should prevent startup.

Media (2–3 minutes)

Short video showing each pre-start step while a trainer narrates what to look for (loose guards, fluid leaks, proper tool placement).

Quick check (instructor or interactive form)

On-the-job task (5–10 minutes)

Perform the pre-start inspection with a mentor observing. Acceptance criteria:

  • All checklist items are completed in order.
  • No unresolved safety or quality issues remain.
  • The operator names at least two conditions that would prevent startup.
  • Observed completion scored as Pass/Fail by the mentor; pass = all items met.

Coach notes

Common error: skipping the guard check. Tip: use the printed checklist taped to the machine for the first five shifts.

Quick assessment & recording

Use a short confirmation form for each lesson to record:

  • Operator name and date
  • Lesson ID and media viewed
  • Quick check score
  • Practice task observed result (Pass/Fail) and notes
  • Coach initials

Collecting these simple records helps you measure time-to-competence, identify recurrent errors, and spot whether a lesson needs revision.

Deployment checklist for supervisors

  • Confirm access to the short media for each lesson at the station (phone, tablet, or display).
  • Assign a mentor for observation and signoff.
  • Print or make the quick-check and acceptance-criteria form available.
  • Schedule lessons close to when the task will be performed — the sooner, the better.
  • Plan three coached repetitions before independent operation is allowed.

Measurement & success signals

  • Time-to-competence: average number of shifts to achieve 3 consecutive passes on observed tasks.
  • Pass rate on first observed practice.
  • Reduction in the targeted defect types after rollout.
  • Mentor confidence rating and notes about recurring coaching needs.

Tailoring guidance

Localize the media and examples to your machine models, parts, and common defects. Keep the structure identical so records and metrics are consistent across locations.

Safety and validation note

This toolkit accelerates learning but does not replace hands-on supervised practice, site-specific validation, or regulatory compliance checks. Acceptance criteria must be validated by site process owners before permitting independent operation.
